After pure excruciating anticipation, the day has come.
4th April 2012 at 19:45 while the sun was setting, I could see my Riley in all his royal glory arrive at his temporary resting place in style…. On the back of a tow truck!
My heart skipped a beat as it smacked me round the face again… This little delight is my new car… I own a freeekin ADORABLE classic car.
After dragging him off the tow truck and praising chitter chatter, and sad farewells from its previous lover, Leigh, the papers where signed and I can officially say…
I AM THE proudest owner of a 1966 Riley Elf Mk III. Tax class: HISTORIC VEHICLE! Genius!
The 2nd Happiest Day of my year so far!!
Back in February 2012, after browsing for cars on gumtree, i managed to stumble over an absolute little gem… An opportunity to become an owner of a 1966 Riley Elf MK III… For a reasonable fee. Being 20 years old, and no pictures available, the car Riley Elf, let alone the car makers Riley meant nothing to me. So in usual 21st century fashion, i headed over to google…. And this is where my love affair started. Google images had blessed me with many many pictures of this man made masterpiece and I thought to myself….
THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!
So after many weeks of research and weighing up to pro’s and con’s, I had made my decision. It doesn’t matter what obstacles are thrown at me, or what all the con’s are… Or the fact my mechanical knowledge stretches as far as how to change a wheel… This has got to be my next challenge in life.
On Saturday 31st March 2012, I began my pilgrimage to Dallington, Sussex, in pursuit of this once majestic vehicle. After going round in circles due to my extremely helpful print out of directions from google maps, i finally found my destination.
I felt like a had travelled back in time. I had descended down an old track to an opening with an old barn surrounded with classic cars…. But the Riley was nowhere to be seen. I hopped out of my car to meet the lovely owner of this masterpiece, Leigh.
After meeting and greeting, we got down to business. Leigh walked me round to where Riley was resting… And as soon as my eyes laid eyes on it…. It was LOVE at first sight… This beauty wasn’t even my car but I was flooded with emotions.
Leigh showed me around and told me about it, and we soon established that i know nothing about cars, but I would love to restore this Riley to its once former glory.
After alot of dancing around and gleaming in total utter awe at all of its royalty, and pointless decision making because I only had one intention that day… We agreed that I would be the new extremely proud owner of a 1966 Riley Elf MK III!!!!!
The HAPPIEST day of my year so far!
So… Thats how this amateur love affair has begun.
